I never cease to be fascinated by still life painting. How is it that mundane objects from our everyday lives can be tranformed into art that has the power to enchant us for a lifetime?
It is not the reproduction of the objects themselves, for a photograph of the same objects would be utterly dull.
At its best, still life painting imbues the subject with an history that brings these ordinary objects to life in the imagination of the viewer.
I paint still life in a modern idiom that distorts line, shape and colour in a way that gives a group of objects a single coherent form and identity.
While I am painting, i like to think of where they have come from and why they are here. The story, however imaginary helps me bring them to life.
Most of all, I like to paint people's passions seen through the ordinary objects that they use.
Whether they are lures and reels from a fisherman's den or the albums and envelopes from a stamp collector's study, they make a wonderful subject for a painting because they speak to their owner's history and passion.
